What is an umbrella company?

An umbrella company is a company that employs agency contractors who work on temporary contract assignments, usually through a recruitment agency. Recruitment agencies prefer to issue contracts to a limited company as the agency liability would be reduced. The umbrella company issues invoices to the recruitment agency (or end client) and, when payment of the invoice is made, will pay the contractor typically the same day through PAYE.


As an umbrella employee, you will be able to carry out a number of temporary assignments without the need to manage your own payroll or run a limited company. You carry out the work for the end client, complete your timesheet and submit any business expenses to us and your end client or agency. We take care of all the administration such as invoicing, chasing and collecting funds from your agency or end client, and we pay you as our employee. It really is that simple.


The umbrella company will also deal with all PAYE and National Insurance contributions and you will have all the additional benefits of being an employee including holiday pay, pension contributions, maternity/paternity leave and statutory sick pay.

The following outlines the steps you will take if you join Flying Umbrella Payroll as a UK-based PAYE umbrella company:


  • After securing a contract role (or an assignment to provide your services to the end client) Flying Umbrella Payroll, as your ‘employer’ signs a contract with your recruitment agency and you sign a contract of employment with us.

  • You complete a timesheet on a weekly basis and send it to both your recruitment agency and Flying Umbrella payroll.

  • Flying Umbrella will then invoice the recruitment agency, and the recruitment company will invoice the end client.

  • We will pay you your wages on due date and issue a payslip which you can access securely.
